Layer 1 blockchain project Sui announced via its official X (formerly Twitter) that it has fully resolved the mainnet outage and that transactions are currently being processed normally.
Regarding the cause of this mainnet outage, the Sui team explained, "It occurred during the deployment process of a long-term fix applied to the mainnet the previous day." Specifically, the incident was triggered when validators restarted to deploy a new binary, and the randomness initialization procedure performed at the start of each epoch failed to complete.
Sui added, "This was because the procedure requires a higher quorum threshold than the Sui network's consensus mechanism." It then analyzed the cause, stating, "Due to a bug in the way the failure state was subsequently preserved, the network failed to transition normally to the next epoch, resulting in the outage."
