[CBC News] With the early June long weekend approaching, interest is growing regarding whether Memorial Day will be designated as a substitute holiday.

In particular, with the nationwide local election day on June 3 designated as a public holiday this year, some office workers are actively discussing plans for an extended holiday by utilizing their annual leave.

However, based on current standards, Memorial Day is not subject to the substitute holiday system, meaning a June "golden long weekend" will not be automatically created.

The substitute holiday system operated by the government only applies to the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays, Children's Day, Buddha's Birthday, Christmas, and certain national holidays such as Independence Movement Day, Liberation Day, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day.

In contrast, New Year's Day (January 1) and Memorial Day are currently excluded from the substitute holiday criteria.
