[Yeongcheon Travel] Best 5 Places to Visit Where History, Science, and Healing Nature Come Together

Yeongcheon, an urban-rural composite city located in eastern Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a historic town of loyalty imbued with the spirit of the Silla Hwarang. Also well-known for its traditional Korean medicine (hanbang) and wine industries, the city boasts a diverse charm where past and present, as well as nature and science, harmonize perfectly. Here are five highly recommended places to visit in Yeongcheon.

Traditional Korean Medicine Experienced Through the Five Senses, 'Dongui Chamnuriwon Yeongcheon Hanmaeul' (Hwaryong-dong) This is a beautiful hanok (traditional Korean house) complex designed to symbolize the five viscera and six bowels (ogangyukbu) of the human body. It features various exhibition spaces where visitors can experience traditional Korean medicine through their five senses. At the Yuui Memorial Hall, visitors can vividly learn about the lives and wisdom of ancient medical practitioners, the history of herbal medicine, and the development process of traditional Korean medicine through 4D dome videos. On the Hanbang Theme Street, visitors can explore the history of the Yeongcheon Yakryeongsi—a historic hub for herbal medicine distribution—and experience self-diagnosis to identify their own constitutional type. With well-maintained outdoor exhibits, a skywalk observatory, and walking paths, it is also an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely stroll in nature.

A Secluded Seowon Honoring the Virtues of Jeong Mong-ju, 'Imgo Seowon' (Yanghang-ri, Imgo-myeon) Established in 1553, this seowon (Confucian academy) was founded to honor the virtues and loyalty of Jeong Mong-ju. It was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea), relocated, and subsequently received a royal plaque once again. Within the grounds, the shrine Munchungsa houses the spirit tablet of Jeong Mong-ju, while his portrait is preserved in Jon yeonggak. The lecture hall was historically used as a gathering place and for scholarly lectures by Confucian scholars. The seowon preserves approximately 200 books, including three portraits of Jeong Mong-ju and 113 woodblocks of the Poeun Anthology, adding profound historical depth. Visitors can encounter a tranquil and picturesque landscape in its well-maintained premises.

A Rare Chinese Architectural Style, 'Yeongcheon Hyanggyo' (Gyochon-dong) As a local national educational institution featuring the classic layout of 'front school, rear shrine' (jeonhak humyo), this was a place for offering sacrifices to ancient sages and pursuing academic studies. The Daeseongjeon (Main Shrine) enshrines the spirit tablets of 25 sages, including Confucius. In particular, this Daeseongjeon was built in 1435 by a Ming Dynasty carpenter using Chinese architectural styles, making it a rare form in South Korea. It is currently designated as Treasure No. 616, recognizing its historical value. Buildings such as Myeongnyundang, the entrance gate Yuraeru, a 500-year-old zelkova tree, and the Dongjae and Seojae (student quarters) evoke an atmosphere of classical scholarship.

A Panoramic View of the Lake's Scenery, 'Bohyeonsan Dam Observatory' (Ipseok-ri, Hwabuk-myeon) This is a scenic spot where the grand landscape of Bohyeonsan Dam can be taken in at a single glance. Inside the observatory, there is a Dokdo Real-Time Video Center where visitors can learn about the current status and history of Dokdo, as well as a shop selling Yeongcheon's agricultural specialty products. By taking the elevator or climbing the 164 stairs to the third-floor observatory cafe, visitors can spend a relaxing time enjoying the refreshing view stretching from the Bohyeonsan Dam to the suspension bridge.

Learning the History of Gunpowder Science, 'Choi Museon Science Museum' (Wongi-ri, Geumho-eup) Opened in 2012, this museum was established to honor the achievements of General Choi Museon, who created gunpowder and developed gunpowder weapons for the first time in Korea. It provides children with opportunities to experience basic science, and the exhibition halls detail the process of Choi Museon's gunpowder development and the history of weapons science. In the Children's Experience Room, visitors can directly experience the process of developing cannons, while the Video Experience Center features a 3D graphic animation covering General Choi's determination to develop gunpowder and the victory at the Battle of Jinpo achieved through the Hwatongdogam (Office of Gunpowder Weapons).
